The curator of this selection of 53 works by 30 artists, who defined the exhibition as “a small chamber concert, or even better, a lied”, proposed a path leading through some of the best photographic works of the last 3 decades of the 20th century. Represented at the exhibition were the Düsseldorf School, with its leading figures the Bechers, as well as a younger generation of German photographers who pushed the origins of German photography in a new direction with their new objectivity, which included amongst others Thomas Ruff, Frank Thiel and the Blumes. The exhibition did not overlook the Post-Modernist trend represented by artist Cindy Sherman, and the successors of conceptual art, such as Rodney Graham, Gordon Matta-Clark and Helena Almeida, and a group of artists who are hard to classify because they possess their own codes and languages, such as Pierre Huygue, Jeff Wall and Gabriel Orozco.
