It is well known that Helga de Alvear’s activity is not circumscribed exclusively to the realm of collectionism; it encompasses multiple contexts such as patronage and the promotion of art and culture. Thus, for the inaugural period of the Helga de Alvear Museum, we have considered it paramount to highlight her decisive role in the consolidation and dissemination of the City of Cáceres within the specific context of contemporary art. This reality was materialized by means of an ensemble of works produced by renowned national and international artists, taking different locations within the historical district of the monumental city as a starting point for their conceptualization and placement. All of these works were exhibited within the framework of a project that stimulated the city’s artistic scene between 2000 and 2008, the Foro Sur Art Fair, directed by José María Viñuela and curated by Rosa Queralt. Helga de Alvear acquired these pieces for her collection which today, two decades later, we will reinstall in their original locations.

Starting from the site of the Helga de Alvear Museum, the exhibition trail curated by Aurora García begins with four interventions which were on public display at Foro Sur 2001: Pello Irazu’s piece located in the exterior area of the new Museum, Rui Chafes’ work in San Mateo, Susana Solano’s in the Plaza de las Veletas and Monsterrat Soto’s in the cistern located in the Provincial History Museum. The trail ends with a work by José Damasceno installed in the Gardens of Palacio Carvajal for the Espacios para otra memoria exhibition, held in 2008 and curated by José María Viñuela.
