Centro de Artes Visuales Fundación Helga de Alvear

Conceptual approach

Information, research, promotion, interactivity and contact with society are the main pillars of the work of the Visual Arts Centre which finds its main outlet in temporary exhibitions around which a large number of its activities are organized and programmed.
The exhibitions in the Centre’s programme are a varied mix both in terms of the concepts behind them and the objectives that guide them. Accordingly, the Centre hosts shows of recently produced works by emerging artists, solo artists or groups, as well as in-depth themed exhibitions which are conceived as a way of researching and revising national and international artists and movements from the recent past. These exhibitions range from introducing collections from other art centres or private collectors; showing commissioned pieces; producing and presenting site-specific works requested from artists all around the world who work in all kinds of creative disciplines; finding new ways of displaying the works in the Helga de Alvear Collection; and showing current art and culture in multidisciplinary combinations.
The conceptual organization of the Centre’s temporary exhibitions is similarly diverse, consisting of historically or chronologically arranged shows; ones that are built around conceptual questions or categories seeking critical contemplation and thought; and others that strive to release an artist’s recent output or that provoke debate between a specific artist and a particular spatial, sociocultural or political setting within the context of the Visual Arts Centre.
Two basic production approaches are foreseen in the organization of these exhibitions: they are either self-produced or produced in collaboration with other institutions and national or international centres with a similar profile.
The Visual Arts Centre organizes an activity programme in parallel with these exhibitions, which helps to greatly enhance their content for visitors. The programme includes guided tours, workshops, activities specifically for schools and the educational community, as well as holding conferences, master classes with artists, debates, courses, workshops for artists, seasons of film, music and performing arts, which are aimed at both the general public and specialists.
The Centre releases a number of publications to accompany its temporary exhibitions. These provide several levels of reading for each show thanks to a wide range of publications including catalogues, informative leaflets, educational material and books.
